If there is one place you can expect to get a high-quality vegan multivitamin from it is The Vegan Society. They are the oldest vegan organisation in the world, founded in 1944. They have since gone on to be one of the largest vegan educational charities.
They produced their VEG1 vegan multivitamin many years ago and it was the first one I took when I went vegan. Back then it was packaged inside a plastic pot but they’ve recently changed this to an aluminium tin, which is really easy to recycle!
I like that they include only the main nutrients and vitamins necessary for a vegan diet. This means you can take this alongside a really healthy plant-based diet and feel safe in the knowledge that everything is covered, and that you aren’t taking more than you need. This is probably what also helps to keep the cost down, it is the most affordable good quality vegan multivitamin on the market!
I recommend this vegan multivitamin to anyone who feels safe in the knowledge that they eat a balanced vegan diet and want to supplement the areas that are harder to cover, like B12 and Iodine.
Should vegans take a multivitamin?
If you follow a really strict meal plan and know the exact vitamins and nutrients you are consuming then a multivitamin may not be needed. But it is recommended to take a multivitamin as a precautionary measure, as a vegan diet may lack certain essential vitamins and minerals like Vitamin B12, D, iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc, which are commonly found in animal-derived foods (although not exclusively). Taking a well-rounded vegan multivitamin supplement can help ensure vegans get enough of these nutrients.
Do multivitamins have enough B12 for vegans?
This fully depends on the brand and formulation of the multivitamin. Some vegan multivitamins specifically include Vitamin B12, while non-vegan multivitamins may not have enough to meet the recommended daily intake. It’s important to check the label and choose a multivitamin that contains a reliable source of Vitamin B12, and to talk to a doctor or a dietitian for personalised recommendations.
