My experience: The pros

There really is nothing fishy about this vegan supplement brand. Let’s dive into this review to find out why!

High dose supplements

When it comes to parting with your hard-earned cash on supplements you want to know that you are actually getting enough of the good stuff, otherwise it feels pretty pointless. So thankfully, it is good to see that Nothing Fishy include a high dose of DHA in their omega-3 supplement and sources of vitamin D in their Algae Vitamin D3 supplement.

This means that when you are taking their supplements you will be sure to notice the differences! Be it with your hair, nails and vision.

What I really like is that one month’s supply of both Nothing Fishy products includes a high daily dosage which is delivered via two capsules. This means you get 60 capsules for one month’s supply. This is perfect for anyone who also supplements with other products or food sources, since they can easily half the dose and still get a good dose of the supplement.

Eco-friendly packaging

Gone are the days when you needed to buy supplements inside plastic pill bottles, because we now have companies like Nothing Fishy paving the way with eco-friendly packaging. When you first sign up for their subscription you get delivered a glass jar to decant your omega-3 and vitamin D capsules into every month, alongside a recyclable paper-based bag that contains the supplements.

Your monthly refills are then sent in cardboard packaging with the recyclable refill pouch. No single-use plastic in sight – hurrah!

You can be happy you are doing your bit for the planet by choosing sustainable algae-based sources of necessary supplements, instead of fish, as well as buying less single-use plastic that’d most likely be ocean-bound.

More affordable than alternatives

If you’ve found your way to this Nothing Fishy review after researching vegan omega-3 brands then it is likely you’ve found a few alternatives to this brand, most of which have a heftier price tag.

Most of the high-quality supplements on the market contain similar ingredients from similar sources. So there is nothing ‘cheap’ in Nothing Fishy’s supplements.

Nothing Fishy’s products are some of the most affordable that I’ve found when also considering the quality of the ingredients and the eco-friendly packaging used. And to top it all off, if you subscribe to their supplements then you can get up to 25% off the monthly amount. And you can get even more money off if you subscribe to their bundle of Vitamin D3 and Omega-3.

My experience: The cons

No supplement is right for every single person. So find out what I think is less than perfect with Nothing Fishy.

No EPA in their omega-3

I know there are many of you asking the question, “Does Nothing Fishy contain EPA?” Well, I’m afraid not. Their algae omega-3 supplement contains a high dosage of DHA (400mg per serving), but no EPA.

But they do have a reason for this. EPA can be converted more easily from ALA, meaning if you eat plenty of plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids, like flaxseed or chia seeds, then you are covering all bases. Try out my chia pudding recipe for breakfast so you can top up your sources of omega-3!

However, if you do struggle to eat a varied and nutritious vegan diet then you may want to consider alternatives with a blend of both EPA and DHA in the supplement.

My verdict

Overall, I really enjoy taking Nothing Fishy’s supplements. Despite them being algae-based, I don’t find the taste to be at all offputting. No fishy burps here! The capsules are a great size and so are easy to swallow.

I find the dosage of both their omega-3 and vitamin D3 supplements to be sufficient and effective. I also really like the flexibility of the dosage, in that you can take 1 capsule if you already consume a lot of omega-3 fatty acids from food, or if you get plenty of vitamin D from the sun because you spend a lot of time outside.

They are a well-loved brand and it is easy to see why. You won’t go wrong buying your omega-3 and vitamin D from Nothing Fishy!

Frequently asked questions

Here are my answers to all your FAQs.

Who are Nothing Fishy?

Nothing Fishy is a UK company founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Caine Woodward. The company has recently been acquired by The Mothership and subsequently has increased its product range from only vegan omega-3 supplements to include algae-based vitamin D supplements.

They are committed to saving our oceans by producing fish-free supplements as well as selling everything in plastic-free packaging. This conscientious choice underscores the brand’s determination to minimise its ecological footprint and inspire positive change in consumer behaviour.

Do algae supplements work?

Fun fact, the reason why fish are touted as excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D is because they consume a lot of algae, an abundant source of these necessary vitamins and fatty acids. Therefore, algae supplements go straight to the source and deliver a purer version of what you get from fish.

To top it all off, algae used in supplements, like these by Nothing Fishy, is grown in controlled environments. This means that they can control the dosage and stop nasty contaminants from getting into their supplements. So, algae supplements don’t just work, they are also a much better alternative to fish-based sources.
