So, I was really interested to find out if Grubby’s recipe kits could help save me some time whilst also feeding my enjoyment of cooking and ensuring I get plenty of nutritious foods into my diet.

TL;DR

I really enjoyed the taste and freshness of both Grubby’s meal kits and ready meals. They are convenient and easy to cook. The recipe kits contained fresh ingredients that lasted just under a week in my fridge, so I could make the most out of the meals. There is a fair amount of packaging for single items, but that is the case with most recipe boxes.

Pros

  • Good variety of interesting dishes
  • Everything tasted different and exciting
  • The meals are made with nutrition in mind
  • Fresh ingredients that last a while
  • I found all the recipes simple and quick
  • Sell both recipe kits and ready meals

Cons

  • A fair amount of packaging
  • No meal kits for one person

What is Grubby?

Grubby is a fully vegan recipe kit brand, now also offering a selection of vegan ready meals. They are on a mission to make it easier for everyone to eat more plants in their diet.

So, whether you are vegan or not, these are meals that have been designed to be enjoyed by all! Plus, they are super simple to rustle up. Their meal kits are preportioned and ready to cook, and their ready meals can go straight in the oven or microwave.

All their meals are designed by chefs and nutritionists, so that you are getting tasty food packed full of nutritious ingredients.

What do you need to get started?

When you choose the kits, you will see what equipment and ingredients are needed. Just click on the recipe and scroll down after the ingredients to see a list of necessary equipment and ingredients.

  • For most meals: Oil, seasoning, utensils, pots, oven, knife
  • For some meals: Blender, measuring jugs, flour, vegan butter

For the ready meals, you will either need a microwave or an oven. Please note, cooking times vary and will take longer in the oven than in a microwave.

My experience

I was gifted a recipe box with three different meal kits: Kimchi Meaty Mushroom Loaded Fries with Gochujang Mayo, Sticky Teriyaki Tofu Lettuce Cups with Basmati and Lime Mayo, and Creamy Sweet Potato, Chickpea and Spinach Korma.

I was also sent four ready meals: Creamy ‘Nduja Rigatoni, Spicy Szechuan Noodles, Miso Tamari Buddha, and Tofu Saag Curry.

Having cooked all the meal kits and eaten all the ready meals, I will now share my experience with you!

The variety of meals

Grubby offers over 20 different meal kits for you to try. These get regularly updated, but you will see some firm favourites stick around. And at the time of writing, they also have 9 vegan ready meals.

If you are relying on recipe boxes like Grubby to eat every week, I’m certain that with this variety, you will never get bored!

They also regularly run special meal kits with vegan brands. For example, right now, they have a collaboration with Mildred’s – a vegan restaurant chain in London. Plus, they regularly partner with food brands like Fable and THIS™. This means you get a great variety of meals utilising different ingredients and recipes!

You can choose from meal kits for 2 or 4 people, but unfortunately, none are for just 1 person. That being said, I know that a lot of these dishes can be cooked and then stored easily in the fridge for the next couple of days.

Moreover, their ready meals serve 1 person, so there are options if you live or cook alone.

Ease of cooking

Each meal kit comes with a recipe card (which can also be found online). All of the recipes that I made were really simple to follow along with. I found most of my dishes were ready to eat in about 30 minutes.

Because a lot of the ingredients are preportioned, it is a breeze adding them to the dish. But there is some chopping involved – which I enjoy. It means I still feel like I am cooking. Although it is never too much!

As for the ready meals, they couldn’t get any simpler. You simply pierce them and bung them in the microwave or oven.

Quality of the meals

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste of all the meals I tried from Grubby. Everything was packed full of flavour, and each dish was unique.

I found the ingredients in my recipe box delivery to be super fresh, which will have helped. Not only did they last throughout the week, giving me time to eat the meal kits when I wanted to, but they also ensured that the dishes were of good quality.

Moreover, the ingredients were varied and nutritious. You could see there was effort put into ensuring that the meals were packed full of healthy, whole foods.

There were also a variety of delicious vegan food products used, like fake meats, which are packed full of protein. I really enjoy Fable, a company making fake meat from mushrooms, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The price

When it comes to the price of their recipe boxes, they are some of the cheapest. Particularly when it comes to 100% vegan brands. At around £5 per meal, it is very reasonable.

Here is a pricing table to show the differences between Grubby and their competitors, also selling vegan or vegan-friendly meal kits:

As for their ready meals, these are also reasonably priced. Most ready meals are priced around £5-7 per person, and theirs are around £6.45. However, they aren’t the cheapest vegan ready meals I’ve seen!

Review verdict

Overall, I am a big fan of both the Grubby meal kits and ready meals. I found everything to be flavourful, nutritious, and easy to cook. It certainly beats convenience food and takeaways – on all fronts!

Moreover, their meal kits are really reasonably priced. In fact, even some of the cheapest. But their ready meals are a little more costly.

Annoyingly, as with most recipe kits, there are a few items that are individually packaged in plastic. This includes things like vegan mayo and fresh leafy vegetables. Although it would be hard to come up with something convenient and cheap that doesn’t use any plastic.

I would recommend their meals to anyone who is looking for something nutritious and flavourful, but also convenient. Whether you enjoy cooking or simply need a helping hand, Grubby will help you to get more tasty and nutritious plants every week!
