Editor’s rating: 4.5/5

From dicing onions without shedding a tear to mastering the art of the perfect stir-fry, a cooking course will have you questioning your sanity and reaching for the takeout menu. But fear not, for with each burnt dish and kitchen disaster you will be a delicious step closer to culinary greatness. So sharpen your knives and brace yourselves for the adventure of a lifetime – or at least a tasty plant-based dinner or two.

All jokes aside, learning to cook great-tasting vegan food from scratch is made much easier thanks to this engaging vegan cooking class by Forks Over Knives. I decided to enrol myself a few months back and began on my own Forks Over Knives cooking journey. I’ve cooked up some delicious food and learnt a thing or two about cooking.

Throughout this Forks Over Knives cooking course review you will read about the aspects that I really enjoyed and where I think improvements could be made. Hopefully, bringing you a well-rounded review of one of my favourite online vegan cooking classes.

Please note: Forks Over Knives now offer three different cooking courses. I tried out their ultimate course, but this covers all the topics from the other two courses provided – ‘plant-based cooking essentials’ and ‘intro to meal prep’.

Why trust my Forks Over Knives cooking course review? Thanks to my experience working as a professional vegan chef, I know a thing or two about cooking! This means that I can tell whether a course syllabus looks thorough enough, whether the classes themselves are useful and factual, and whether the food that is made throughout the course is to a high standard.

What is Forks Over Knives?

Forks Over Knives is a 2011 American advocacy film that advocates a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diet as a way to avoid or reverse several chronic diseases. The film is based on the ideas presented in the books The China Study and Whole by T. Colin Campbell and Caldwell Esselstyn. The film is directed by Lee Fulkerson and produced by John Corry. The film has been described as “a vegan version of Super Size Me” and has been praised for its strong message and persuasive arguments.

Since the documentary they have been building up an extensive online platform with vegan meal plans, recipes and the online cooking courses that I am reviewing here.

Is Forks Over Knives the best cooking course?

There are loads of vegan cooking courses to choose from, but in my opinion, the most thorough and engaging course is this one by Forks Over Knives. They have a large amount of exciting vegan recipes to learn as well as loads of skill-based lessons to improve your general cookery skills. I would also recommend checking out the monthly membership courses from Veecoco, a fully vegan online cooking school.

A fully vegan cooking course - forks over knives cooking class

The cooking class is 100% vegan

Forks Over Knives is a fully vegan brand and they worked together with vegan chefs to create this cooking course. This also means that the whole course is suitable for vegans.

You can learn everything from using a knife effectively and creating stocks and sauces, to cooking with plant-based alternatives and learning how to plate food beautifully. All that, without having to cook with meat, fish or dairy. Which is what you would have to do if you went to a traditional catering college or many in-person cooking schools.

Therefore, you can learn absolutely everything you need to know to cook incredible plant-based food in your kitchen without having to go against your ethics and morals.

On top of this, because it is taught by vegan chefs, you will learn how to make the most of plant-based food since plant-based food is their life and their job! For instance, I love that there are plenty of classes on cooking with mushrooms and vegan cheese alternatives.

Loads of skills based classes - forks over knives cooking class

They have loads of skills-based lessons

Anyone can learn how to cook great-tasting recipes from the internet, but not everyone knows how to handle a knife, or how to create their own recipes from scratch. Thanks to the Forks Over Knives cooking course you can learn all the skills you need to pull off skilful dishes and your own recipe creations.

Or if you are happy to follow simpler recipes, it will simply give you the know-how on being safe and efficient when using your equipment.

As well as knife skills, you will learn how to maintain your fridge and cupboards, select the right kitchen equipment for you, cook without oil, balance flavours, and season food. I found it to be very thorough, making these skills-based lessons perfect for any budding vegan chefs, as well as any keen home cooks. It could also be appropriate for anyone working in a food-related role, like in a cafe, as a nutritionist, or in food development.

Large library of recipes to practice - forks over knives cooking class
The course is hosted on Rouxbe’s platform which has hundreds of plant-based recipes at your disposal

It includes access to a large library of recipes

On top of all the cooking classes you will go through within the Forks Over Knives cooking course, you will have access to their large library of recipes. At the time of researching for my review, there were over 400 plant-based recipes at my disposal.

These recipes vary in difficulty level and span all courses. You can access these at any time, meaning you can fall back on them if you want to refresh any of your skills learnt throughout the course, or if you are super keen you can make these at the same time as learning!

The recipes include all sorts of food, like bread recipes, side recipes using vegetables, and larger main courses.

My thoughts on Forks Over Knives cooking course

I love any opportunity to learn more about cooking and it was such a pleasure doing so with Forks Over Knives. The vegan cooking course is thorough, covering everything you need to know to create tasty meals for yourself. It provides you with the knowledge to build up your own recipes but also aids you in understanding how to follow other people’s recipes.

I found the whole unit on plant-based staples to be really useful, especially since this isn’t something you’ll find in traditional cooking courses. On top of this, I found the meal prep unit to be really helpful. I am rubbish at doing this, but this course made it effortless.

Areas of improvement

My only issue with the Forks Over Knives cooking course is the platform that it is hosted on. It feels a little bit old and outdated. It can look a little bit clunky and sometimes a tad messy. Unlike its main competitor, Veecoco (read my full Veecoco review here), who have a rather snazzy course platform with beautifully filmed lessons.

But that being said, it doesn’t at all take away from the course content itself which is engaging and vibrant. You can also still easily navigate around the website, I just hope they match the design of the course platform to their fun and vibrant brand website soon. It would definitely make it a lot more inviting!

Review conclusion

Being able to access such a large library of vegan recipes alongside thorough skills-based lessons is incredible. You can tap into the knowledge of plant-based chefs from around the world, whilst in the comfort of your own kitchen. Having lifetime access to all of this means that you can continue learning for life.

Thanks to the Forks Over Knives cooking course you can learn how to make impressive meals to impress your friends and family, as well as to make your life a lot easier and quicker when handling a knife and cooking meals in your kitchen.

I myself now have a whole bunch of recipes that I can fall back on when I’m feeling less creative and I definitely benefited from refreshing my kitchen knowledge. Plus, meal prepping is now much less of a chore thanks to their unit dedicated to just this.

I would recommend the Forks Over Knives cooking course to any level of cook. It has something in it for everyone!

I also believe it would make the perfect gift for any vegan foodies in your life. Forks Over Knives make it super easy to buy it the course as a gift when you browse through their website.

“While you will have access to the course content for life, students taking The Ultimate Course have 90 days to complete all activities and pass in order to earn their Certificate of Completion.”
If I do not care about the certificate can I Them still benefit for The Ultimate Cource and use more than 3 month.

Hi Henrik, I believe so! You may want to double check with Forks Over Knives though

Hello. Just read your review of Forks over knives, rouxbe, and veecoco. I received a FB add about Forks over knives and was going to take it. I wanted to get a review on it and make sure I’m taking the best course. I have no idea why I want to learn. Maybe I wasn’t influenced by FB suggestion smh lol. I don’t even like cooking. With that being said – I think I am lost on the 3 choices. Veecoco sounds like it is just recipes and how to cook something but not starting from scratch on how to cut and use a knife etc. FOKnives sounds like a course (someone like me who has no skills in the kitchen starting from scratch and will need to buy equipment)- it starts from the beginning. Rouxbe is just like FOK starts from scratch BUT has more courses to really go into depth in each area like pasta making and deserts etc. FOK and Rouxbe sound the same but one is $149 and the other is $1400. And Veecoco you take later after you have learned the skills… Do I have this correct? Trying to figure out which one to take. I really want to learn how to cook vegan, how to shop and meal prep my own meals- but also learn how to have delicious food that has taste and I want to learn how to enjoy it. I want to enjoy shopping and meal prepping and eating it. Hopefully your wisdom will help me make a decision before I chicken out lol Thank you.

Hey Chrystee, thank you for your message. I completely understand where you are coming from. There is a lot of choice out there and it can be tough finding the right one for you! So, the Rouxbe course I would recommend for anyone who wants to start a career in cooking. It is a lot more intense than Forks Over Knives. I really like Veecoco for learning new cuisines, but like you said, if you want to start from scratch and learn knife skills, meal prepping skills, etc., then you should try out FOK. I hope this helps!

Thank you for this review. Did you find out if the FOK Ultimate course content is available for life, along with the recipes? It would lessen the compulsion to rush through it if I knew I could take longer than 90 days. The syllabus appears to have more of the interesting content toward the end of the course. Do you know if there are any online study groups for this course?

Hey Julie, upon purchase you will get lifetime access to the FOK course! Plus they have online discussion forums where you can chat with others. I hope this helps 🙂
