Finding a suitable vegan egg alternative can be tricky, especially now there are so many different offerings out there. You can even make vegan eggs yourself, whether that is a chia egg, flaxseed egg, aquafaba, or even apple sauce. But sometimes convenience trumps all, so let’s focus on the vegan egg alternatives that can be easily bought from your supermarket.

I have found that every vegan egg alternative out there caters for a different variation or way of eating an egg. For instance, some may replace the egg whites well in a cake recipe, and others may just scramble well.

I am yet to find a vegan egg alternative that does everything. So read on to find a range of my favourite vegan egg alternatives with my suggested uses for each.

Oggs Aquafaba

Oggs make some of the best vegan supermarket cakes, so it is no surprise that they also have one of the best vegan egg alternatives. This is made using aquafaba and it is one of my favourite vegan egg alternatives for baking fluffy and light sponges.

Orgran Vegan Easy Egg

The Orgran vegan egg alternative has been around for as long as I can remember. They use chickpea flour to creating a powder which binds really easily when mixed with liquid. I find this works perfectly as an omelette mix.

Ackee

Ackee is a fruit from Jamaica that is traditionally eaten with salt fish. It made a sudden appearance in the vegan scene when someone realised how much it resembled scrambled tofu. It is really creamy in texture and has a similar bite to that of egg. I even use this in my fried rice recipe.

This flavourless smooth silken tofu block works wonders as the base for a vegan quiche recipe. You just need to blend it with some eggy flavours, like black salt, and pour into a quiche base. Bake for 1 hour and leave to set. You’ll be amazed at how well it holds together.

So, a vegan egg is either used to ‘bind’ ingredients together in recipes, or to actually mimic egg in a dish.
